Gerhard Richter

I always admired this painting by Gerhard Richter because I thought it looked exactly like my mother in the morning when she is sitting in the garden. Even more of a coincidence is it’s called “Betty”, which is my grandmother’s nickname. I recently decided to peer around his whole body of work and found these photographs with almost sculpture like paintings on top of them. I personally paint with only a palette knife trying to create the most complex layers possible, so I naturally am a big fan of these images. He discovered his love for this technique accidentally when using magazines to help create straight lines in his paintings and accidentally painted over the existing images on the page.
