When Pieter Hugo received a text from a friend of men in on the streets of Lagos, Nigeria with hyena’s on chains he knew that he had to track down what Nigerian newspapers were reporting as a rouge group of bodyguards, drug dealers, debt collectors, bank robbers. Only later did he learn these men were known as the Hausa, or what translates as the hyena handlers. Living within the periphery of the city, the group of men, a little girl, several hyenas, monkeys and a handful of rock pythons worked entertaining crowds as a means to peddle traditional medicines. Pieter proceeded to travel with the group and document them over a period of eight days, all which appear in his book entitled The Hyena & Other Men.
